Group study session at Idaho School of Massage Therapy

With over 40 years of clinical and academic experience under its hands, the Idaho School of Massage Therapy (ISMT) offers a non-accredited Massage program with both a holistic and medical emphasis. We recognize a need and growing market for knowledgeable, skillful graduates who also possess the “trifecta” of attributes for success in massage therapy: professionalism, a business plan and communication skills.

Our massage program is registered with the Idaho State Board of Education, and taught by experienced, qualified faculty who focus on the skills and competencies necessary for the safe and effective delivery of therapeutic massage and bodywork.

Frequently Asked Questions

The full program takes 10 months, when taken in this order: Trimester A, B, C. Taken in any other order, you will need a minimum of 12 months due to our schedule.

Evening classes are held Monday-Thursday 6-9. Day classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am - 3:30 pm. Some joint classes are scheduled 2-3 Saturdays per month in Trimesters A, B & C. And students are required to participate in our Student Clinic, held 3 Sundays per month to acquire their practicum hands-on experience in our on-site supervised setting.

Upon Satisfactory completion of an Accredited (we are not) or State approved Massage Therapy course (we are) with 110 hours of supervised practicum and full payment of tuition, program graduates are eligible to sit for the Massage Board Licensing Exam (MBLEX), offered and scheduled by an independent testing provider, approved by the state of Idaho. With a passing score on their MBLEX, one may apply for State Licensing through the ID Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL.) See passing rates in our Catalog.

All graduates get equal access to job placement assistance, though it must be said that all massage therapists, regardless of school of origin, are self-placed, whether in a spa or clinical setting, private or partnership practice. This is why ISMT professionalism courses require each student to design, turn in and implement a functional and comprehensive business plan. See placement rates in our catalog.

The core sciences totaling 180 hours, made up of Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Kinesiology and Research Literacy. This meets the science curriculum requirements for eligibility to sit for the Massage Board Licensing Exam. Also, ISMT teaches distinct technique styles spanning Western and Eastern theory and practice totaling 247 hours: Swedish Massage, Seated Chair massage, Connective Tissue Bodywork, Clinical Massage, Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Release, Sports Massage and Hydrotherapy, Visceral Massage, Lymphatic facilitation, Geriatric Massage, CranioSacral technique, Asian Integrated Bodywork and Reflexology. 70 hours of Business classes include Ethics and Professionalism, as well as Record Keeping. In addition, each student must complete 110 Practical Clinic hours as well as 8 hours of First Aid/CPR, and 20 hours of Movement and Meditation studies to receive their certification. Some classes will be held outside of regular class time.

Tuition fees: $9,720. Supplies and Books will come with an estimated additional cost of $1226.

Research shows touch to be as necessary to wellness as breath, water and food. We believe now is the time to weave intentional touch therapy back into the fabric of our health care system. Massage is complementary to every other physical, mental, emotional and spiritual therapy and skilled practitioners of this art and science are joining the ranks of licensed health care providers as a growing industry in nearly every state in the U.S.

Hours: 650 Tuition: $9,720

Tuition is classes only and is not the total cost. Students will purchase and obtain their own textbooks and supplies from a supplier of their choosing. See book list by trimester for required texts and supplies. Registration fee, Lab fee and Student Insurance are an additional cost. (link to “Catalog” page 2) Application and Lab Fees

As massage therapy is both an art and a science and requires both a clinical and an intuitive component, Movement studies help students with the "right-brain" activities, focus, self-management and injury prevention. Modalities include but are not limited to meditation, breath work, journaling, tai chi, qi-gong, and yoga. Some students will find this aspect of the training "harder" than the memorization-heavy science classes, others will have just the opposite experience. It is our goal to turn out students with skill sets on both sides of their brain.

It is recommended that students start in September or April so that the Western portions in Trimester A and B can be taken consecutively. Classes taken on an individual basis “a la carte” or out of the recommended order is not ideal for beginning students, but may be perfect for existing therapists needing a few more classes for licensing purposes or those who have completed human biology courses elsewhere.
